A cake called Herman

A sourdough cake? Yes indeed - and here is the starter, on its 10th day, ready to become a cake -
Some time later, after addition of apples and raisins and a few other things ... the cake - delicious! -
A recipe for the cake, and for the starter, is here. It's called "German Friendship Cake"; you divide the starter in four parts when baking, using one for the cake, keeping one to feed towards making another cake, and giving away the remaining two, with some of the fresh cake and the recipe. I don't know how long we'll keep this up... The cake freezes well.

we did this for a while last year. there was a chocolate cake recipe too. It was absolutely gorgeous. But...after a while you get tired of the beery smell in the house and also find that there can be too much of a good thing!
and after we stopped, Jim said they were still getting at least one a week for some time at work where he had taken one batch to a colleague.

I've just made three of these and frozen them as tray bakes! Yum!
